MoPW implements Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital in Dubai
The Ministry of Public Works has contracted an architectural design consultant to build Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital in Dubai under the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Public Works, for designing and implementing projects on par with international best practices.
According to the project scope and description, the 272-bed comprehensive inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facility with a size of 54,000 m2 will be the first mental health center of excellence in the Gulf.
The hospital design was inspired by the Islamic and local architecture style and conceptualised by joint team of architects, planners and professionals from the ministries of public works and health and the consulting office who set their eyes on the international best standards in psychiatry and modern designs of mental health facilities.
The primary design concept of the facility caters for the creation of a non-threatening, peaceful and serene healing environment which by design minimizes the anxiety associated with mental health issues, facilitates their inclusion into and adaptation to community. It is a facility offering an oasis-like setting that welcomes the public and provides a comfortable and relaxing environment in which to receive integrated psychiatric treatment and other related services. It is planned to reflect and respect the culture and values of its constituents, and relieve the stigma often associated with mental health afflictions.
A unique feature of the design is the “half-way-home” patient accommodation, a transitional phase for eligible patients to return to normal life.
