His Excellency Sheikh “Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan”, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of UAE University, has recently honored students and members of the faculty winners of the “Chancellor’s Award for Innovation 2015” which embodies the university’s mission of supporting innovation, creativity, leadership and excellence in scientific research, in a ceremony in the university’s campus in Al Ain City, in the presence of Dr. Ghaleb Alhadrami, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies.
The ICT, renewable energy, health, transport and communications sectors ranked first, which are vital strategic sectors serving several important areas, and works to support sustainable development efforts in the State.
The award of the health category of the award went to a team of professors and students who designed a smart warning system to protect children from being left alone in closed cars. The system attempts to notify the owner of the involved car that a child is left alone inside the car. In case the owner does not respond within a certain period of time, the system will automatically sound the alarm and call the police to report the situation. The work team included Dr. Fikri Kharbash, Amnah Rashid Hmud, Jameeleh Salem Al Kaabi, Khawla Yusuf Al Marzouqi, Mariam Mohammed Al Khateri.
In the renewable energy category, the award went to a team of students who innovated a system to generate electricity from the movement of car tires, by adding a material with electro pressure and thermoelectric properties to the vehicle frame to convert the mechanical energy generated by the car’s movement into electrical energy used to operate electric systems of cars, the work team was made up of University students; Zainab Ahmed, Razan Yousefh, Meatha Jjoma’a and Hamda Ahmad.
In the information technology category, the award went to a project of designed software to analyze data in mobile phone networks to help police in tracking and hunting down suspects, anywhere anytime, the work team was made up of Dr. Nizar Zaki, Wasfieh Shehhi, Asmaa Al Marzouki, Fatima Al Yamahi and Shaima Al Amri.
Winners of the category of the transport and communications category presented a system for calculating optimal routes for University buses using a GPS device and information about multiple destinations of students, by reading the University ID for each student entering the bus through the central database of the UAE University, so that the system automatically selects the destination of every student and the best ways to reach it by an interactive screen displayed to the driver of the bus, and the work team was made up of University students; Aisha Al Balushi, Fatima Al Shamsi, Reem Al Kaabi, Osha Al Shamsi.
Winners of the public sector award introduced a smart safety helmet with improved head protection using built-in smart devices and applications to protect the head through manufacturing it from high-performance materials and containing smart electronic applications that increase levels of security through automatic emergency contact with the relevant authorities, as well as through a side button the user presses in case of danger, the work team consisted of Ahmad Tlabani and Dr. Basil Al Sayed.
